The philosophy behind
the work I do is that I want everything we use to be
beautiful. If the everyday tools we use are beautiful as
well as functional I think it's easier for each of us to
act from the depth of our own meaning. If the things we use
are invested with significance they help lend significance
to everything we do. As often happens in life, I came at
this theory on my own, only to discover later that it was
well-trod ground. Those familiar with the Arts and Crafts
or the Bauhaus movements will recognize the goal to combine
functionality and art.
I especially like it when I know the artisan or know
something about them. One of my favorite cups was made by
my friend Terry at Mad Dog Pottery. In fact, there's probably something
he made in every room of my house. Some of the tools I
use to weave were made by a dear woodworking friend.
Blankets I use to stay warm were made by various
knitting and crocheting friends. What a pleasure it is
to use all these things and remember the person who made
them; each one a reminder of love.
